“Antropóloga em Campo”: Uma etnografia sobre gênero e práticas de pesquisa na Região Norte do Brasil

Abstract

This study aims to understand the role of women in the North of Brazil in the production of anthropology and its integration into the national scenario, considering the influences of intersectionalities of gender, race/ethnicity, generation, social class and origin on their experiences. The research involved interviews with 12 anthropologists born and working in the North region, as well as the application of techniques such as participant observation, field diary and bibliographic analysis. The research was based on gender studies, women in science and decolonial criticism. The work allowed us to rescue the name and contributions of anthropologists whose achievements were “forgotten” in the history of the discipline, from those from the evolutionary period to the pioneers of Brazilian anthropology. Furthermore, the research revealed the nuances of being a woman in anthropological fieldwork and reflections that range from “being of” and “research in” the North region, advice marked by gender and power relations that communicate about clothing and behaviors during research, including issues such as jealousy, fear, violence and security strategies. It also highlighted the various forms of violence faced by anthropologists from the North region in their relationship with the main anthropology centers in Brazil.
