Geoturismo como Ferramenta no Desenvolvimento Sustentável da Comunidade São João do Urubuí-Presidente Figueiredo/AM

Abstract

The research aims to showcase the geotourism potential of the São João do Urubuí Community in Presidente Figueiredo (AM), focusing on integrating geodiversity with sustainable tourism. The study area features various natural and cultural attractions, such as waterfalls, caves, and rock outcrops, which constitute a rich geological and cultural heritage. The methodology employed participatory approaches, combining qualitative and quantitative aspects to understand the socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental relationships that influence local tourism. The study was conducted using an action-research approach, engaging a multidisciplinary team, tourists, students, visitors, and community members in activities such as informal dialogues, meetings with locals, and the use of the Geossit app for geological site inventory. This inventory identified seven sites of geological and touristic interest, leading to the creation of a geotourism route adapted to local seasonal conditions. These seven sites exhibit medium to high geotourism value and are considered highly relevant attractions at regional, national, and international levels, with the potential to draw visitors and boost the local tourism market. More than just a geological inventory, this study gives voice to the communities living in geologically significant areas and reflects on how these populations perceive and interact with the geodiversity around them. How can geotourism be developed in collaboration with local communities? The answers to these and other intriguing questions can be found in this research, which merges science, culture, and sustainable development. The study highlights the importance of community involvement in tourism management and positions geotourism as a strategic tool for environmental preservation and heritage education promotion.
