Abstract

Ethnogeomorphology is the science that studies the knowledge of traditional peoples about landforms, taking into account their culture and their unique way of producing and spreading this knowledge from generation to generation. In the Amazon region, there are many traditional peoples who have their own knowledge, which is essential for their survival, among them the riverside communities, who live on the banks of the region's rivers. The general objective of the research was: To understand ethnogeomorphology from the perspective of rural family farmers from riverside communities: Caioazinho and Ferreira, located on the right bank of the Uatumã River, in the municipality of Itapiranga - Amazonas. To achieve this general objective, the following specific objectives were considered: a) Identify the landforms perceived by family farmers for use and appropriation; b) Describe the landforms based on the knowledge of family farmers and present an ethnogeomorphological classification of the community; c) Integrate ethnoknowledge with scientific knowledge to understand the local geomorphic analysis. To develop the research, the theoretical-methodological assumption of Libault (1971) was used, which defines the “Four Levels of Geographic Research”, which are: the compilation level, the correlative level, the semantic level and the normative level, which refers to the structure, organization and systematization of the activities, respectively, that were carried out in the riverside communities of the Uatumã River, present in the municipality of Itapiranga. Through this research, it was possible to identify the traditional knowledge produced in the interior of the municipality of Itapiranga, and that this knowledge is necessary for the reproduction of the lives of its practitioners. In addition, it was important to highlight a little of the culture present in this region of the state of Amazonas, still little explored by science and which has much to offer, especially in relation to cultural aspects and knowledge about the environment. In addition to the results achieved, this research is expected to delve into the core of Amazonian ethnogeomorphology, making it present in local academic discussions, since it is a concept still little known and used. The need for this research, in addition to documenting these traditions, acts within the scope of the dissemination and propagation of knowledge that is cultural, human and that is at the core of the Amazonian population.
