Abstract

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most effective treatment for controlling symptoms of advanced knee osteoarthritis, and the demand for surgery is expected to increase in the coming decades. However, some approaches are controversial and still a matter of debate in the current literature. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the approaches of Brazilian knee surgeons in the pre-, peri- and postoperative periods of patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty; to develop a protocol adapted to the reality of HUGV. METHOD: An online survey was conducted with orthopedists from the Brazilian Society of Knee Surgery, who answered an anonymous questionnaire with 61 questions about their practices regarding this procedure. The responses were analyzed in relation to their absolute and relative frequency, and whether there was consensus or not. Based on the responses obtained and the literature review, a protocol of approaches in TKA was developed. RESULTS: From January to May 2023, 95 participants answered the questionnaire, with consensus on 56.1% of the questions, close to consensus on 8.8% of the questions, and no consensus on 35.1% of the questions. The development of the conduct protocol was based on the research data, combined with the available scientific evidence, and adapted to the reality of HUGV. CONCLUSIONS: With the research, it was possible to analyze the TKA routines among orthopedists from various regions of Brazil, in addition to developing a TKA protocol for HUGV. Thus, we believe we contribute to improving the care offered to the population through the standardization of evidence-based conducts.
